Why Budda Baker, invaluable UW defensive back, took snaps on offense for the Huskies

As a true freshman, Budda Baker played more than anyone for the Huskies last season, starting all 14 games at free safety and combining for about 1,100 snaps on defense and special teams.

He wants to do even more, and it’s looking more and more likely that he will get that chance.

Baker, the former Bellevue High School star, took his first snaps on offense at Washington’s fourth practice of fall camp Tuesday, picking up the experiment he started in the spring. As they showed last year with Shaq Thompson, UW coaches are willing to get creative with how they use their best and most versatile athletes, and Baker certainly fits the bill.
