Washington athletic department projects nearly $15 million deficit in 2016

Newly appointed athletic director Jennifer Cohen will need to lead the University of Washington athletic department out of a nearly $15 million hole in 2016.

In a budget report prepared for next week's Board of Regents meeting, the department predicted a $14.825 million deficit for 2016, up from $856,000 in 2015. The 2016 shortfall -- the eighth such deficit in the last 25 years -- will be covered by the department's reserves.

"Like most college athletic departments, we have a lot of work to do to ensure a balanced financial future in a new and changing landscape of college athletics," Cohen said in a statement.
