‘Up’ house could move by barge to Orcas Island

An affordable-housing nonprofit has stepped forward to take over the home that’s widely celebrated for its statement against development.

The “Up” house once owned by Edith Macefield may soon drift away.

OPAL Community Land Trust, a nonprofit that helps provide affordable housing, has plans to relocate the Ballard home that has turned into a long-standing symbol of anti-development in a neighborhood booming with commercialization.

The group is launching a $200,000 fundraising effort to move the now-vacant home by barge to Orcas Island.

Macefield at one point reportedly declined an offer of more than $750,000 to leave the tiny house, now wedged between towering concrete walls near the Ballard Bridge and covered with plywood.
