Snohomish County will pay $620,000 to the family of a man who died from medical complications while in jail custody in July 2012.

Sheriff Ty Trenary called the death of 22-year-old Michael Saffioti “a tragedy” and said the county agreed to settle the lawsuit “to own up for our mistakes and to cover litigation costs.”

He said that the jail has instituted a number of improvements since Saffioti’s death. The jail now screens all inmates at booking for serious health conditions.
