Nathan Hale High School senior -- and as-of-this-moment University of Washington commit -- Michael Porter Jr. was named the Gatorade national boys basketball player of the year on Wednesday.
Gatorade officials surprised the 18-year-old Porter at his home Wednesday afternoon just two days after he was named the Naismith Player of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Past winners of the Gatorade award include Kobe Bryant and LeBron James.
Porter is the second player from the state to win a Gatorade player of the year award in two years after Lake Stevens quarterback Jacob Eason, now the starter at the University of Georgia, took home the football award in 2015.
