Jimmy Shane won the hydroplane Gold Cup title on the Columbia River in Kennewick on Sunday, taking home the sport’s most prestigious trophy for the second year in a row.
Jean Theoret crossed the finish line first but was called for a pre-race violation and disqualified.
Shane averaged 145.756 mph with J. Michael Kelly, the second-place finisher, averaging 145.088 mph.
The win was Shane’s ninth career victory in H1 Unlimited Hydroplane racing.
“I don’t know what we did, but we stayed inside Kelly and we were able to do it,” said Shane.
“We stayed in that inside lane in that extremely brutal water, and somehow we beat the ‘5’ boat by a few lengths.
