MIAMI (AP) — Hurricane Guillermo is racing west-northwest but remains far away from Hawaii in the Pacific.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Guillermo is still about 1,430 miles (2,300 kilometers) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. The Category 2 hurricane had maximum sustained winds near 105 mph (150 kph).
Guillermo could become a major hurricane with sustained winds of at least 111 mph Friday night or early Saturday. It is moving west-northwest at 18 mph (30 kph).
Current forecast models show Guillermo will move near the Hawaiian islands sometime next week, though it is expected to weaken to a tropical storm by then.
