Steve Gordon, former NBA special assistant, was led away in handcuffs Thursday after an emotional sentencing for bilking investors out of millions.
Onetime Sonics special assistant Steve Gordon was led away in handcuffs Thursday after receiving a four-year, two month prison sentence on wire fraud charges.
Federal court judge Ricardo Martinez gave Gordon, 62, known as “The Hat Man” during three decades working in the NBA with the Sonics, Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves, the higher end of a recommended sentence range and denied his request to surrender at a future date. Prosecution and defense attorneys had recommended a sentence of two to five years after Gordon agreed in April to plead guilty to a lone fraud charge in cases involving three dozen victims bilked of more than $4 million.
