These days, when college football fans think of Iowa, they think of Kirk Ferentz, tight ends, and the 130th best offense in the country*. Ferentz has earned his status as synonymous with the program after 25 years at the helm, five more than the next-longest tenured current college coaches, Mike Gundy and Kyle Whittingham. But Ferentz isn’t the only long-tenured coach in Hawkeyes history. In fact, the program has had exactly two head coaches dating back to 1979, when Hayden Fry took over a moribund team that hadn’t posted a winning season in almost two decades.
[*For what it’s worth, I don’t think Ferentz actively tries to build bad offenses.
