Andrew Andrews, Huskies’ lone senior, likes what young team is showing on defense

So far Andrew Andrews has been impressed with the speed in which the nine newcomers on the Washington men’s basketball team have learned the system.

Even though coach Lorenzo Romar questions whether the young Huskies can play the type of demanding man-to-man defense that he expects, Andrews, a two-year captain, likes what he’s seen during fall practices, a closed-door scrimmage at Saint Mary’s and last week’s intrasquad scrimmage highlighted by a 40-point performance from freshman forward Marquese Chriss.

“Usually freshmen hang on to their high-school mindsets,” said Andrews, UW’s only senior. “But these guys have done a really good job of sticking to our defensive principles.
