With Bashaud Breeland sidelined, Justin Rogers aims to fill crucial nickelback role

RICHMOND – When Bashaud Breeland sprained his right medial collateral ligament on the second day of training camp, the Redskins lost one of their most versatile defensive backs. For the next four to six weeks, the coaches will try to find the best solution for replacing Breeland, a second-year pro, who had an impressive rookie campaign. For the player they select, the injury to Breeland represents an opportunity to audition for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Breeland played a key role because although DeAngelo Hall and Chris Culliver top the depth chart at right and left cornerback, respectively, the third cornerback – or nickelback, as he is called – essentially is a starter as well because so many NFL teams utilize three-receiver sets, and because that back must cover the slot receiver, which for many teams proves a major threat.
