In the most noteworthy of their early cuts, the Washington Redskins released veteran safety Will Blackmon Friday.
Multiple outlets reported that Blackmon had been cut Friday afternoon, in advance of the league-mandated cut down to 53 players by Saturday at 4 p.m.
Blackmon has been in the NFL for 10 seasons and in Washington since 2015. He first played cornerback before converting to safety last season. The Redskins will carry a $75,000 dead cap hit this season from his contract following his release.
By releasing Blackmon, the Redskins cleared room for another player, likely rookie cornerback Joshua Holsey who the coaching staff loves and who has had an excellent preseason and training camp.
