George Allen took over as Head Coach of the Washington Redskins for the 1971 season. His motto was “The Future Is Now”. He also started a tradition that has continued through the years for the Redskins. Allen treated the special teams unit as an equal partner with the offensive and defensive units. He realized there are three phases to football and having a great special teams group can mean the difference between a win and a loss.
The original trifecta consisted of Center Len Hauss, Kicker Curt Knight and Punter Mike Bragg. In addition, the great Redskins return men started with Speedy Duncan, Ted Vactor and Herb Mul-Key.
