It’s not too often that the NFL sees player-for-player trades anymore, let alone between two of the best players in the league, but that was the case on March 3, 2004, when the Washington Redskins and Denver Broncos swapped Champ Bailey and Clinton Portis.
While Bailey – a 1999 first-round pick – had appeared in four Pro Bowls during his five seasons with the Redskins, returning head coach Joe Gibbs wanted to build his offense around a running back capable of carrying the load.
