Three keys to improving the Redskins’ red-zone offense

RICHMOND — Jay Gruden’s offense gained a respectable amount of yards last season (358.6 yards per game, 13th in the NFL) but scored pitifully few points (18.8 per game, 26th in NFL).

Far too often the offense would march inside the opponent’s 20 only to sputter in the red zone. (their red-zone success rate, 47.9 percent, also ranked 26th ).

Thursday’s preseason opener at Cleveland provides no guarantee that the Redskins will get opportunities to work on their red-zone efficiency, so Gruden has emphasized work inside the 20 like an exclamation point toward the end of most training-camp practices.
