Scott McCloughan doesn’t expect Redskins to be ‘big players’ in free agency again

MOBILE, Ala. — For the second straight season, it doesn’t appear that the Washington Redskins will be major players during free agency, general manager Scot McCloughan said at the Senior Bowl on Wednesday.

The franchise adjusted its approach under McCloughan last year by building through the draft as opposed to spending lavishly on some of the top free agents, and it resulted in an NFC East division title. Washington’s top free agents last offseason were cornerback Chris Culliver, who signed a four-year deal worth up to $32 million, and defensive lineman Stephen Paea, who inked for four years and up to $21 million.
