Scot McCloughan: Jay Gruden stands out as talent evaluator

Jay Gruden's days in the Arena Football League could help the Washington Redskins as they move past the Scot McCloughan era. That's because when Gruden coached in the Arena League, he had to do everything -- and scouting players became a necessity. It's something he still likes doing, and has done in his first three seasons with the Redskins.

Gruden's evaluation skills could mean they don't need to hire a direct replacement for McCloughan, whom they fired as general manager in March. The Redskins will start interviewing candidates soon, though they remain uncertain if they'll hire a general manager, promote from within, stay status quo or just hire someone else in personnel.
