CLEVELAND — Heading into Thursday’s preseason opener at Cleveland, Redskins rookie Brandon Scherff and offensive line mate Morgan Moses had limited experience, both individually and as a tandem, in the roles they were asked to play.
But the rookie and second-year player acquitted themselves well in holding down the right side of the offensive line, which coach Bill Callahan re-made midway through training camp. The offensive line didn’t allow a sack of quarterback Robert Griffin III in the starters’ two series and helped veteran back Alfred Morris average 5.3 yards on eight carries.
The Redskins’ first-round pick in April’s NFL draft, Scherff (6-foot-5, 319 pounds) was penciled in as the starting right tackle from Day 1, envisioned as a bookend to Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams.
