Redskins starters Scherff, Paul lead Monday’s injury list

RICHMOND — The Redskins had a scare in practice Monday afternoon when first-round draft pick Brandon Scherff injured his right ankle midway through 11-on-11 drills.

The 6-5, 319-pound Scherff, who was recently switched from right tackle to right guard, had his ankle taped and watched the rest of practice from the sideline, while Spencer Long and Arie Kouandjio each got some time at his spot.

Tight end Niles Paul, elevated to starting status over incumbent Jordan Reed in advance of Thursday’s preseason opener at Cleveland, injured his left shoulder.

Both starters are being evaluated, a team spokesman said, so there was no immediate word on the severity of their injuries.
