The Washington Redskins promoted quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell to offensive coordinator Tuesday, the team announced.
In doing so, the team named former offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh as a senior offensive assistant.
This move marks another promotion for O’Connell, a 33-year-old former quarterback who is rising up the coaching ranks. Last year, the Redskins expanded his role to passing game coordinator after he was initially named as quarterbacks coach in 2017.
O’Connell spent five years (2008-2012) in the NFL as a backup, serving most of his time with the New York Jets. He began coaching in the NFL in 2015, when he was named quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns.
