The Redskins on Saturday made the expected business move following the season-ending injury suffered by Adam Hayward, placing the inside linebacker on injured reserve.
The move frees up a spot on the 90-man roster, which has been in constant flux since an epidemic of injuries began during training camp.
Hayward tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the second quarter of Thursday’s 21-17 preseason victory over Detroit, just moments after quarterback Robert Griffin III suffered a game-ending concussion on his third sack of the night.
The loss of the Hayward, 31, represents yet another setback for the special-teams unit, which struggled last season.
