Redskins icon Jurgensen, 84, announces TV, radio retirement

Legendary former Washington Redskins and Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Sonny Jurgensen, a mainstay of local sports broadcast coverage of the Redskins for decades, announced his retirement Thursday.

The 84-year-old Hall of Famer made the announcement on the pre-game radio broadcast of the team’s first preseason contest of the year against the Browns in Cleveland.

“I’ve decided to hang up my headphones and my clipboard. It’s been a great 55 years in Washington. I want to thank our Redskin fans for being so generous to me and our teams, we owe it all to you,” Jurgensen said in a statement released by the team.
