RICHMOND — The Redskins have cut 2013 fourth-round pick, strong safety Phillip Thomas, ending his short, injury- and disappointment-filled tenure with the team. Meanwhile, the team signed cornerbacks DreQuan Hoskey and Bryan McCann. Washington also waived rookie cornerback Tevin Mitchel, who will have season-ending shoulder surgery.
The Redskins initially believed that Thomas could develop into their long-term solution at safety. But his rookie season quickly ended when he suffered a lisfranc tear in his left foot early in the preseason opener. Thomas missed the entire year after having surgery to repair the foot. Hamstring injuries sidelined him for much of the 2014 preseason, and Thomas opened the year on the practice squad.
