Ahead of their season opener in Philadelphia, the Washington Redskins claimed former Eagles running back Wendell Smallwood off waivers, according to multiple reports.
Smallwood, a 2016 fifth-round draft pick, was released Saturday after spending three seasons with the Eagles. The 5-foot-10 running back ran for 364 yards on 87 carries in 2018.
The Redskins will need to make a corresponding move to fit Smallwood onto the roster. One option could be putting Shaun Wilson on injured reserve as the running back has been out with an ankle injury.
That would still give Washington five running backs, a curious decision given Adrian Peterson, Derrius Guice and Chris Thompson seem to be the main contributors.
