The Washington Redskins began the process of trimming the roster from 75 to 53 players Friday afternoon .
Backup strong safety and special teams standout Akeem Davis was among those waived, a person with knowledge of the situation said.
Davis, a second-year pro out of Memphis, endured an injury-plagued preseason and missed Thursday night’s game because of a hamstring injury. During training camp, Davis broke his thumb and had to have surgery to insert screws into it. He missed only one day of practice, however, and played with a cast on it. Davis had an interception in the preseason opener.
