After being a fourth round draft pick in 2012 Kirk Cousins presence as a Washington Redskins quarterback was controversial. Many questioned why Mike Shanahan drafted Cousins in the first place especially with Robert Griffin III being the second pick in the draft and the franchise being built around him.
Up until the 2015 season Kirk Cousins had an up and down career. He had played in the shadow of Robert Griffin III as a backup and had some nice moments but he’d been mostly inconsistent. In 2014 he had a chance to become the starting quarterback for good when Griffin went down with an ankle injury.
