Preston Smith's versatility helps Redskins' pass rush

ASHBURN, Va. -- Notes and analysis for the Washington Redskins game vs. the Detroit Lions:

  1. Second-year linebacker Preston Smith has had a quiet season, but that doesn’t mean he’s been ineffective. Smith has been very good at times, especially against the run. But his versatility has been a bonus. And that shows up when the Redskins use their three-linebacker alignment along the defensive line. They’ve used that at least three times in the last two weeks with two sacks. They’ll put Ryan Kerrigan and Trent Murphy at end with Smith over the nose.
