Phidarian Mathis is among several looking to prove value as role players

Football is back! Training camp practices for the Washington Commanders begin today, but what also begins are weeks-long position-group battles for players in various stages of their careers. For example, defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis has missed 23 out of a possible 34 games since being drafted by Washington in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft. Mathis hopes to establish he can stay healthy and provide value in Washington's run defense as a situational lineman. Wideout Olamide Zaccheaus, a veteran free agent that Washington acquired this off-season, brings several things to the table from a skills standpoint that GM Adam Peters and OC Kliff Kingsbury would love to have in their receiver room.
