In the most basic sense, Scot McCloughan surprised no one with his first pick as general manager of the Redskins: He selected a big man who plays along the line. Time will prove whether he took the right big man, whether Brandon Scherff will make him look smart or make him regret passing on Southern California defensive tackle Leonard Williams.
Either way, the real work of plugging the endless holes on the Redskins’ roster begins now. His success in the draft with the 49ers and Seahawks stemmed less from home runs at the top than through finding consistent contributors throughout the lower rounds.
