A few weeks ago, I took a closer look at how rookie pass rusher Preston Smith was developing. At that point, Smith just played a career-high 45 snaps and was a constant presence in the game against the Bears. But despite generating pressure, Smith failed to get to the quarterback in time to register a sack to really impact that game. I wrote then that the next step for Smith was to finish plays. To do that, he needed to take better, more direct routes to the quarterback to help speed up the process. Once engaged in a block, Smith doesn’t have too many issues.
