The Washington Commanders selected Illinois Fighting Illini interior defensive lineman Johnny Newton with its first pick in the second round of the NFL draft. What initially came as a big surprise for some, with Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne still on the roster, but Newton only adds juice and depth to the interior rotation. Newton does come into the league with two fresh injuries and will see his first action as a Commander after recovering from Jones' fractures in each foot. That certainly should not be overlooked, but what Newton brings, Washington desperately needed behind Payne and Allen because Phidarian Mathis and John Ridgeway are best in run support; Newton is a 3-down defensive lineman.
