Before the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at the Washington Redskins game against the New York Giants, four Redskins raised their fists in a black-power salute, to bring attention to the civil rights issues within America.
Wide receiver DeSean Jackson, tight end Niles Paul, wide receiver Rashad Ross and cornerback Greg Toler raised their fists above their head, the same black-power gesture made by often-cited sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
The current national-anthem movement, first started by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, has spread across the NFL.
Kaepernick first sat during the anthem.
