Better safe than sorry: Bill Callahan ‘cross-training’ virtually every Redskins guard at center

When it comes to durability, Kory Lichtensteiger is the class of the Redskins roster. Converted from guard to center last season, the 30-year-old Lichtensteiger hasn’t missed a start since Week 6 of the 2011 season, when he tore an ACL. That means he’s carrying a 49-game consecutive starting streak into this season’s opener against Miami.

Nonetheless, Redskins offensive line coach Bill Callahan is taking no chances at the position, working out a half-dozen guards — essentially every guard and hybrid lineman on the 90-man roster, except Shawn Lauvao — at center, as well. That’s in addition to the two centers in line behind Lichtensteiger: free agent Tyler Larsen (6-feet-4, 315 pounds) and South Florida’s Austin Reiter (6-3, 296), whom the team added with a seventh-round pick in this year’s NFL draft.
