Our Redskins training camp news update for August 14th:
The NFL has issued a warning about on-field fights in the wake of several training camp skirmishes, including a series of brawls between Washington Redskins and Houston Texans players at a recent joint practice.
"These rules are in place for the protection and safety of our players to keep them on the field," NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent wrote regarding game officials' point of emphasis regarding in-game fights during the preseason and NFL regular season.
"As professionals, no matter how emotional the game becomes, there is nothing that should resort to fighting," Vincent continued. "Coaches are encouraged to emphasize to players, coaches, and other club personnel who are on the sidelines, that fighting will not be tolerated We greatly appreciate all of your efforts to advance our great game, keep it competitive and professional, and to ensure that it is played at the highest standards."
The penalty for fighting in a game is 15 yards with a potential ejection if the infraction is judged as flagrant by a referee.
