NFL Free Agency starts on March 9th, and the next few days will feature at least a few Washington Redskins rumors. The team has is actually over the cap limit, but that will change when Robert Griffin III's $16 million cap hit and a few others are cleared via release or trade. While the Redskins won't be huge players, they should be able to make a move or two. With that in mind, here are a few of the more interesting rumors and news tidbits on the Redskins.
Kirk Cousins Extension Update
Cousins signed his franchise tag before the weekend, which was a no-brainer. Cousins will have a $19.95 million base salary next season, the second-largest of any player. While it's not a long-term deal, taking home nearly $20 million for one season is a great deal for Cousins. The team and Cousins have yet to re-enter contract negotiations and they might not in the near future. Cousins has all the leverage at the moment, especially since backup QB Colt McCoy is also a free agent. This could be a case where Cousins plays out this season and the team goes tries to get him a long-term deal after this season.
Nick Foles Trade?
This isn't free agency related, but the Redskins were mentioned as a possible landing spot for Nick Foles if a trade happens. Foles would likely need to take a pay cut for a trade to happen, but he'd be a solid backup QB for Washington. Plus, the addition of Foles could give the Redskins insurance in case Cousins struggles or wants to leave after next season.
Damon Harrison A Target?
The Redskins are likely to target defensive line help in free agency and Damon Harrison has been mentioned as a possible target. He might not re-sign with the New York Jets and he'd be a strong nose guard for the Redskins. Terrance Knighton might not be back and Harrison would be an upgrade. If Harrison isn't an option, a player like Ian Williams (last with the 49ers) could be in play.
