The Washington Redskins hold the No. 21 overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft after winning the NFC East. While the season ended in a first round playoff loss, the Redskins are hoping to make the playoffs again next season. However, drafting a bust early could cause them to take a step back in 2016. Here are three players the Redskins need to avoid in the first round:
3. Jayron Kearse, S, Clemson Tigers
Kearse has drawn comparisons to Kam Chancellor because of their size and play style, but he has some serious deficiencies in his game. He's a liability in coverage and isn't even that great against the run. Kearse could have troubles covering tight ends in the NFL, which has become a necessity for safeties. His draft stock seems to be trending away from the first round, which is a good thing for the Redskins. He's not worth taking in Round 1.
2. Kendall Fuller, CB, Virginia Tech Hokies
The Redskins need CB help, but Fuller isn't the answer at the No. 21 overall. While Fuller has talent, he's coming off a knee injury and looked shaky at times during his short 2015 campaign. Those two things are big red flags for Fuller. Had he stayed healthy and rebounded later in the year, Fuller could easily be worth the first rounder. His sophomore year tape is worthy of a Top-15 pick at least. Fuller could be a solid late first or early second, but this is just a bit too high for Fuller. The team is better off hoping Mackensie Alexander (or Jalen Ramsey/Vernon Hargreaves fall) is on the board. If not, there will be several quality defensive linemen worth taking.
1. Scooby Wright, MLB, Arizona Wildcats
Wright has talent, but he shouldn't be the Falcons' first round pick. He had a monster sophomore season, but took a step back in his junior year because of injuries. The Redskins badly need an upgrade at MLB in their 3-4 scheme, but Wright isn't the answer in round one. Those injury issues might not go away and Wright is better off being taken in the second round. He's a fun player to watch, but the Redskins are better off hoping Reggie Ragland slips to them than reaching for Wright. For more Redskins news, download the Chat Sports Android and iPhone app.
