Backup QB Kirk Cousins appears to have avoided ligament damage in his foot. Cousins, the Redskins' top backup to Robert Griffin III, suffered a mid-foot sprain in Monday's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Cousins hurt his foot during the second quarter, when he was tackled along the sideline by Steelers linebacker Lawrence Timmons. The second-year player out of Michigan State left on crutches, wearing a protective boot, and fans feared Cousins might miss a significant portion of the season with ligament damage or a Lisfranc injury. Fortunately, we're hearing that Cousins could return by the start of the regular season.
If Cousins and Robert Griffin III are both unavailable due to injury, the Redskins are prepared to start 32-year-old QB Rex Grossman. Grossman hasn't played since the 2011 season, when he threw 16 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
