In Redskins news today, it seems that the much-maligned Washington Redskins' secondary may be getting a face-lift sooner rather than later.
Along with the rumors circulating that New England Patriots' Pro Bowl cornerback Aqib Talib may find a home in the District of Columbia, the Washington Post is reporting that seven-year veteran safety Brandon Meriweather will become an unrestricted free agent next Friday.
Columnist Mark Maske reports that Meriweather's contract, which was reworked last offseason after year one of a 2-year, $6 million deal, will "void five days after the Super Bowl and there is no option year in the deal to potentially tie him to the team next season."
After missing all but one game during the 2012 season, Brandon Meriweather appeared in 13 games this season, posting 53 tackles and 2 interceptions. Injuries are the biggest question for Meriweather, and could serve to decrease his value on the open market.
Meriweather spent the first four years of his career with the New England Patriots, appearing in every game the Patriots played from 2007-10. However, in the past three years, Meriweather has appeared in just 25 of a possible 48 regular season contests in his time with the Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins.
