Redskins news has had a fascinating offseason both in regards to the 2014 NFL free agency period, all of the drama surrounding new free agent signing DeSean Jackson, and May's upcoming NFL Draft.
However, with all of the work that the Redskins have done to improve themselves after a tough 2013 NFL season, the Redskins are hovering relatively close to the salary cap threshold.
Yet, according to Rich Tandler's Real Redskins blog, "there is no particular urgency for them to do anything about" the fact that they are just $2.5 million below said salary cap.
"They released three players on Saturday but the impact on the cap was minimal due to the Rule of 51. That rule states that up until the final cuts are made in late August only the top 51 salary cap numbers on the team count towards the salary cap. This is how a team can afford to carry 90 players on the roster and still stay within cap limits."
Tandler also adds, "only two members of their draft class will have any immediate cap impact. The top two picks will count a total of about $500,000 against the cap. The rest will have cap numbers that will fall outside of the top 51."
So, unless the Redskins are looking to make another financial splash like the one they made with new wide receiver DeSean Jackson, they can hang around the $2.5 million line for awhile and survey their options.
