The Washington Redskins have seen Jarvis Jenkins develop into a reliable starter, but his status going forward is anything but certain.
According to Tarik El-Bashir of CSN Washington, the Redskins are set to overhaul their defensive line under Scot McCloughan, and Jenkins' future is up in the air. While the 26-year-old has made progress in his four seasons with the team (three, if you leave out the rookie year he missed with an ACL tear), he hasn't made the kind of leap coaches were hoping for...and as a former second-round pick, the expectations were high.
Jenkins is now a free agent, and while there's mutual interest in another deal, Jenkins won't see much playing time unless he improves. The promising player the Redskins drafted hasn't shined through, and the team is reportedly done waiting for him to come good. If he doesn't produce immediate results, someone else will.
The Redskins have a few defensive linemen on their radar, but a lack of cap room limits their ability to start fresh. In addition, the team is prioritizing their secondary ahead of the D-Line (as they should - it's a much more glaring weakness), and any recognizable players that come in this Spring are much more likely to be safeties or defensive backs than defensive lineman.
So, what does the future hold for Jenkins? That's up to him, but the Redskins are done playing him heavy minutes while waiting for him to turn the corner.
