Redskins: Defensive Backs, Free Agent Must Haves

The 2013 Washington Redskins fielded their worst defense in 50 years, so to say they need help is a bit of an understatement.

Fortunately, the NFL offseason is a time of hope, and with salary cap penalties finally over, the 'Skins can improve immediately. Well, on paper, that is.

Although recent history shows Redskins' free agents have mostly been busts, here's a list of top defensive backs under the age of 30 that would transform Washington's defense:

1. Aqib Talib

All signs point to the Redskins pursuing Talib first. Reports last year stated they were highly interested, but couldn't afford him because of cap penalties. Along with being in his prime, he is tall, physical and has had success covering elite receivers.

2. TJ Ward

The consensus is that Jairus Byrd is the best safety available, but will definitely cost the most money. Now, I'm not opposed to pursuing Byrd, but there are a lot of holes to fill, and you don't want to use most of the money available on one player. However, with Ward, you still get Pro-Bowler, just at a cheaper rate. Ward will make a world of difference for Washington's secondary, and he has experience playing in a 3-4 system.

3. Captain Munnerlyn

Interest in Munnerlyn grew after he started all 16 games for the Panthers' vaunted defense this past year. He was typically assigned the opponent's best receiver, so imagine what he could do paired with  Talib - they could potentially be one of the best tandems in the league.

4. Sam Shields

Shields would make another great choice at cornerback. He's a proven starter and shows speed, quickness and great instincts. He also has experience in the 3-4 system.

5. Donte Whitner

Another 3-4 system safety, this hard-hitting playmaker brings fear to all offenses in the League. If the Redskins can't land Ward or Byrd, Whitner would be a great addition. Taking away the middle of the field will go a long way in turning this defense around, and his presence alone will make a big difference.

Oh, and did I forget to mention they should resign Deangelo Hall?

Anyway, here are a few honorable mention candidates that would also be good signings:

Walter Thurmond

Vontae Davis

Dominique Rodgers Cromartie

Mike Mitchell
