Donovan McNabb was spotted working out with his former Eagles teammates at a players-organized workout in Cherry Hill, New Jersey this past week.
A lot of the publicity given to this story chose to focus on the overarching fact that McNabb was in Eagles’ territory, for what seemed to be an anti-Redskin reason, in light of this past season’s theatrics.
However, after a little research, the main reason McNabb was in the Philadelphia area was discovered: he was there to dedicate the McNabb Family Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Voorhees Replacement Hospital.
Now, did the news stations not have access to this information when they broke the news? Maybe. Did they think omitting that information made a better story? Maybe. But the bottom line is, McNabb didn’t made a special road trip up to Philly just to practice with his old team.
He went there first and foremost for philanthropic reasons.
Now, Redskin fans should probably be a little perturbed by this week’s past. Your team’s starting quarterback working out and training with his old team.
However, this season’s off-season isn’t your run of the mill winter break. With no collective bargaining agreement, players are forced to organize their own training camp with as many players as they can get.
And, as any athlete knows, getting together a pickup game is sometimes difficult and you take as many bodies as you can.
So, while McNabb has been nothing but controversial since he donned a Redskins jersey, the fact that he is voluntarily working out in the off season should be welcomed.
But who knows, maybe the trade winds of moving him to the Vikings or the Titans will come true in the Fall (when the season finally begins) and we won't have to worry about McNabb past Summer 2011.
