Goal-Setting

With news of positive talks occurring between the Owners and Players, I figured I'd set out  some goals I think the Redskins should try and implement this season.

1) Pick a starting quarterback, and back them 100%: Whether its John Beck, Donovan McNabb, or someone not talked about yet, there's nothing worse than having a the leader of your team looking behind them worrying about his job security. Being comfortable in your role is the key to success.

2) Find that go-to wide receiver of the future: Is Anthony Armstrong the next studly WR of the NFL? Could be. We didn't address the receiver position in this year's draft, so maybe the coaches are impressed enough to trust Armstrong as our number 1 if Santana Moss leaves in free-agency.

Moss in my opinion has been the best receiver to play for our team in a long time. His endurance, heart, and home-run threat has been a welcome part of our team since his dynamite (1483 yards, 9 TDs) arrival in 2005. So, I hope he stays.

3) Make a commitment to the future and stick to that plan: The main reason the Redskins have been average since Snyder's takeover is because of the lack of continuity at Head Coach. There are only a few people in the world that can take over a team one season, overhaul it the next, and make it a contender.

People I would trust to do that are Bill Parcells, Bill Cowher, Mike Krzyzewski, and Phil Jackson. You'll notice, two of these don't even coach football.

So, let's commit to Shannahan and his game-plan, if only to give our players and coaches a sense of stability. If that means that Beck, Ryan Torrain, Armstrong and Fred Davis are the center pieces of our future offense, let's at least give them an honest chance.

4) Develop our draft picks: Ryan Kerrigan's and Jarvis Jenkins' need to produce for the Redskins goes without saying, but the good teams in this league get quality out of their later round picks. Let's get rookies like Evan Royster and Leonard Hankerson to, first make the team, then once on the team, let's commit to developing them into impact players. Too often, especially recently, Redskins draft picks have provided little to no impact on the team: a wasted draft pick.

5) Win, but more importantly, win at home: there's a reason commentators and writers throw around the phrase, "home field advantage." The reason is because it's true. Our fans are the most loyal in the league: what better way to reward your fans than to win with them all around you? Although FedEx Field just shrunk, we still will be the best fans in the country, always there to support our Burgundy and Gold.

There are five goals. If addressed wholeheartedly, I believe the Redskins will begin to show signs of improvements. If not, we're in for more of the same.
