With news hitting Washington this weekend that Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III will likely be forced to sit out Game 1 of the 2015 regular season, a vocal sect of Redskins fans are expressing their displeasure with what has been a never-ending cycle of "wait till next week" as of late.
The Redskins could of course stick with Kirk Cousins and roll the dice on that if RGIII's injury woes continue and/or he comes back and is ineffective. If they want to go a different route, however, here's 4 QBs The Redskins Could Target To Replace Robert Griffin III.
1. QB Jason Campbell -- Free Agent
Would the Redskins be interested in a reunion with the 33-year-old veteran who threw for over 3,200 yards in both 2008 and 2009 with the franchise? He's only had two winning seasons as a full-time starter, but his wealth of starting experience and adeptness as a game manager could intrigue Washington. He may come in as a depth option behind Kirk Cousins, but he'd be a serviceable hand to have on deck. Three teams have already reportedly inquired about him. Are the Redskins one of them?
2. QB Ryan Mallett -- Houston Texans
Mallett lost Houston's starting QB battle to journeyman Brian Hoyer and he's not exactly thrilled about it. While his decision-making can be questionable sometimes (see: sleeping in and missing a recent practice), he's got a cannon for an arm and excellent touch on his deep balls -- perfect for maximizing DeSean Jackson as a deep threat. He's also adept at getting the tight ends involved in the passing game, which would help him considerably with Washington's sketchy offensive line depth. It'd take a valuable draft pick to get him, and it may not work if Hoyer struggles out of the gate, but this might be the dream scenario for Jay Gruden.
3. QB Tajh Boyd -- Free Agent
Boyd was cut from the Steelers recently -- a move that still baffles us from a long-term perspect. Boyd has struggled with his weight at times and can float some of his downfield throws, but he's a quick foot-setter who's adept at the short-to-intermediate game and has the quicks to roll out of the pocket and stretch the perimeter. He's unpolished and young, but he's a talented and successful former college quarterback who could slot well into the RGIII role with time.
4. QB Jared Goff -- 2016 NFL Draft
If the Redskins feel content to ride out the choppy quarterback waters this year and perhaps put themselves in position for a high draft pick next year, Goff could be their guy. Goff has fantastic footwork and an accurate, pinpoint throwing style. He doesn't have the biggest arm but he could very well keep the Cal tradition alive and become the next Aaron Rodgers -- intelligent, on target with his progressions and a franchise quarterback worthy of Madden covers and insurance commercials.
