The Washington Redskins were perhaps the surprise of the NFL this season, clinched a playoff berth by winning the NFC East. The team's first priority this offseason is re-signing its own players, and Washington has several key contributors they need to bring back next season - but also those they need they need to get rid of to help them move forward. Here are three players the Redskins should cut this offseason:
QB Robert Griffin III
It's practically a foregone conclusion that RGIII won't be back in Washington next season after losing his starting job to Kirk Cousins and was demoted to third-string QB all season. The Redskins can save over $16.1 million by letting Griffin go, and they have no plans to pay a backup quarterback that much money. Washington may try to trade him, but Griffin will not be back with the Redskins next year.
WR Andre Roberts
Roberts was been very effective in the slot for his first five seasons in the league, but his production dimished drastically in 2015 as he caught just 11 passes for 135 yards and no touchdowns. It's clear that he is no longer a reliable option in head coach Jay Gruden's offense, and since the Redskins are due to pay him $4 million in both 2016 and 2017, he's a very likely cut.
OC Kory Lichtensteiger
Lichtensteiger finished the season on injured reserve with designation to return, and Washington's offense line was able to have success without him during the last half of the year. As a result, the Redskins may be inclined to cut him to save the $6.5 million they owe him over the next two years.
