The Washington Redskins surprisingly won the NFC East and made the playoffs this season, and they are expected to take another step forward next year. Free agency is at the forefront of the minds of everyone in Washington's front office as they try to fix a few weaknesses, but here are three players the Redskins would be smart to avoid:
3) Antonio Cromartie, CB
The Redskins may look to upgrade their cornerback position this offseason, but Cromartie won't be a guy they bring in. He will be one of the more well-known names on the market, and though he is still under contract with the New York Jets, he's likely to be a cap causality. His deal will give him $8 million the next two years and $9 million in the final season, but the team can cut him with no dead money this offseason.
Why should Washingto avoid paying him that money? He'll turn 32 next year and is coming off a down season. The reasons the Jets are likely going to cut Cromartie are exactly why the Redskins should avoid him. He's a big name, but Cromartie appears to be on the decline - plus he likely won't sign a short, team-friendly deal. Read more Raiders news in the Chat Sports iPhone and Android apps.
2) Jermaine Kearse, WR
Washington may need help at wide receiver as the contemplate cutting either Pierre Garcon or DeSean Jackson, but Kearse isn't the long-term answer. He's not good enough to be a true No. 1 wideout (even though he's looking for that kind of money) and the Redskins shouldn't overpay for another No. 2/No. 3 type and instead invest it elsewhere. Going after a true No. 1 guy like Alshon Jeffery or drafting someone high in the draft would be better options.
1) Chad Greenway, LB
Greenway has spent his entire NFL career with the Vikings since the team drafted him in the first round in 2006, but he's not the same player he once was. With his contract expiring, Minnesota is expected to let Greenway go to get younger at the position. Washington is looking to upgrade their inside linebacker position, and Greenway is not going to fill that void. Given his declining skills and athleticism, Greenway would only see the field in a backup capacity for Washington, and the Redskins would be better served spending that money elsewhere.
