Troy Brouwer had hoisted the Stanley Cup over his head, felt the thrill of escorting it through his hometown and seen his name etched onto a wall of champions, which meant he kept rare company inside the Washington Capitals’ locker room. On the 2014-15 roster, only Brouwer, with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010, and defenseman Brooks Orpik, with the Pittsburgh Penguins the year prior, had won NHL titles, which made both relative experts on the subject of getting there.
