It took them three extra games and then three overtime periods, but the South Carolina Stingrays finally finished off the Toledo Walleye, 1-0, in Game 7 to advance to the Kelly Cup Finals for the fourth time in their history. Joe Devin‘s triple overtime goal came 105:35 into the game.
No one scored for five straight periods in an otherwise high-scoring series, as the previous three games ended 5-4 in overtime. Jeff Jakaitis held down the Stingrays’ fort with 44 saves and Jeff Lerg, replacing Neil Conway, made 41 saves.
From Jakaitis’s stand-on-his-head performance, to Wayne Simpson‘s record breaking point totals, this series took a team effort to win.
