It was only a matter of time. One-by-one, Alex Ovechkin overtook Peter Bondra‘s team records, the latest being Saturday as Ovechkin passed Bondra to become the Caps’ all-time hat-trick leader.

There’s one record Bondra has that Ovi will not break: Short-handed goals. Bondra has 32, followed by Bengt Gustafsson and Mike Ridley with 17 each. Ovechkin has four – three came in his rookie season, and he scored one more in 2008-09.

For many years, Bondra was the Caps’ leading scorer and most popular player. He once owned the majority of the team’s scoring records, all of which Ovi has overtaken, except for short-handed goals.
