The defining image of defenseman John Carlson’s season, the fifth straight in which he never missed a single game, occurred before every practice, away from the bright lights of NHL rinks. Starting shortly after Thanksgiving, Carlson asked assistant coach Todd Reirden for one-on-one work at the Capitals’ facility, drilling fundamentals and tracking toward personal goals both declined to list.
